Introduction to Literature (ENGL 230)
Students who successfully complete this course will be able to:
- Demonstrate knowledge about literary texts that represent various genres and historical traditions.
- Enhance appreciation of literature as a form of art.
- Demonstrate knowledge about the conventions of various literary genres.
- Employ analytical strategies for reading literary texts in various genres.
- Demonstrate knowledge of major concepts and vocabulary associated with literary study, and demonstrate the ability to use these concepts in the analysis of literary texts.
- Observe the relationship between literature, culture, history and politics.
- Connect issues and themes expressed in literature with their own interests, experiences, and concerns
Rhetoric of the Color Line (English 280)
Students who successfully complete this course will be able to:
- Identify and define a selection of rhetorical terms, concepts.
- In written and oral form, articulate rhetorical situations as they apply to primary texts studied.
- In written and oral form, articulate the rhetorical strategies used in the primary texts studied.
- In written and oral form, articulate the connection between historical/rhetorical situation and the rhetorical approaches used by the authors studied.
- In written and oral form, articulate the meaning of their personal racial identity.
Science Fiction (English 292)
- describe the historical development of science fiction from Jules Verne, H. G. Wells, and the writers of the magazine period of science fiction to major recent and contemporary writers.
- identify and describe the distinctive features of science fiction.
- analyze story-telling techniques and theorize the processes writers use to create future fantasy narratives based in present realities.
- employ new modes of thinking and problem solving in varied unpredictable environments.
