General Information

Admission Requirements

To apply for admission, you must submit to the Office of Graduate Studies:

• A completed graduate application and application fee of $40 (which is paid online to the College of Graduate and Professional Studies).
  • The online application includes a document upload feature for the submission of your required goal statement, an optional electronic letter of recommendation request system, and secure application fee payment processing.
  • Upload your resume and professional goals statement.  Your statement should include experiences which have influenced your decision to pursue graduate studies and a self-assessment of your potential for advanced study and service in your chosen field.
• An official transcript from all institutions of higher education attended; verification of completion of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution.
• If your undergraduate grade point average (GPA) was below 2.80, an official score from either the GRE or MAT test that was taken within five years of the date of application.  If your undergraduate GPA was 2.80 or higher, the test is not required.
• Three professional letters of recommendation from non-relatives (online, in the application system).
• International Students: Please visit the graduate admissions page for additional requirements for international students.  For deadlines, please follow the deadlines recommended for the MSEM program.  Please note, classes are taught entirely online and there are no required face-to-face meetings.

Deadlines

The MSEM program operates on a rolling admission basis, which means that you may apply at any time and begin in the next upcoming semester (Fall or Spring).

For Fall admission, it is recommended that you submit your application materials by the end of April.  For Spring admission, it is recommended that you submit your application materials by the end of October.  Please be sure to apply early if you are planning to go through the Financial Aid Office.

You may also begin your studies at any time as a non-degree graduate student.  A maximum of nine (9) credits may be earned in non-degree status, and can be transferred and used as credit towards the MSEM degree.  Non-degree applicants should complete an on-line application.  You may apply as a non-degree graduate student through the online application portal.  For more information about non-degree status, click here.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's)

Is the Masters of Science Emergency Management Program really all online?

Yes!  The Millersville University’s online “campus” is very much like a traditional university environment.  There is a library, a bookstore, and all the administrative offices of the University — admissions, advising, registration, student accounts, financial aid, etc. — are present online.  Instructors are available for private consultation by telephone during regular office hours (posted online) as well as by e-mail.

 

What If I have no experience in Emergency Management?

Even though a number of students enrolled in the program are employed in emergency management positions, many of our students have limited experience in emergency management.  The program is designed so that it not only benefits those currently working in emergency management but also those seeking to enter into emergency management careers.

 

How many and what types of classes will I have to take?

The curriculum consists of 30 credit hours of study: 24 credit hours of required courses and an additional 6 credit hours of electives.

Each course will incorporate knowledge and skills from or relevant to academic research, best practices, human behavior, key organizations, as well as legal issues, policies, and regulations.

 

What is it like taking an online course away from the university?

Participating in an online course is intellectually challenging and personally rewarding.  Most classes meet in an online meeting format weekly for 75 minutes.  The instructor provides lectures and offers resources, asks and answers questions, assesses your progress and gives feedback, in class and privately, in the electronic classroom.  Fellow students discuss topics by posting comments, questions, and observations in a discussion board format.  Your responses and contributions become part of the ongoing interaction.  Each online session is recorded and archived, and can be accessed at any time at the students’ convenience.

 

So how do I apply for this program?
