Paul Charp, Ph.D.

Dr. Paul Charp has over 30 years of experience in the environmental radioactivity and radiation biology fields. Most of these years have been with Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC/ATSDR) where he is a Radiologic and Nuclear Subject Matter Expert. While at the CDC, he has evaluated environmental releases from Department of Energy weapons production facilities, Department of Defense sites, and industrial/residential sites where radioactive materials have impacted both the environment and public health. He has served on advisory boards, is the vice-chair of the CDC Radiation Safety Committee and is a nationally recognized expert. Dr. Charp has taught at the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech), provided radiologic training to FEMA and other federal, state, and tribal organizations. He has authored government reports such as public health assessments, health consultations and public health advisories for the CDC/ATSDR.

A member of the national Health Physics Society, Dr. Charp has served on their Standards Committee and Placement Committee. He has been president of the Atlanta Chapter of the Health Physics Society. Dr. Charp also is a member of the national Advisory Team for Environment, Food, and Health which provides answers to complex questions raised during nuclear and radiologic disasters.

He has a MS in Radiation Biology and Ph.D. in Zoology from the University of Tennessee. He also has a MS (Health Physics) from Georgia Tech. Dr. Charp's previous research interests have included control of cell division, DNA damage and repair, and protein biochemistry. His current scientific interests include effects of low-dose radiation on biological systems, environmental transport of radioactive materials, and national security issues.
