Abstract: Each year, tornadoes are one of the leading, weather-related phenomena responsible for loss of life and property in the United States (Fricker and Friesenhahn 2021). Although tornado lead times have increased in recent years, research shows that tornadogenesis, along with track and intensity, remains a primary forecasting challenge (Brotzge & Donner 2013). A better understanding of how various lifting mechanisms impact the LCL height at tornadogenesis will help mitigate these challenges. This proposed research project will investigate differences in height threshold of the LCL at tornadogenesis between the Great Plains and Northeast through observations of shear, lift, instability, and moisture (SLIM) parameters.
