Abstract: The value of knowing exactly what one is eating cannot be overstated. However, some vegetables in area markets are sold under taxonomically ambiguous common names which cannot be matched precisely to their species identity.Vegetables of the Colocasia-Xanthosoma complex, for example, are edible tubers produced by as many as three different tropical plant species (C. esculenta,C. antiquorum, andX. sagittifolium)and can be found in Lancaster County markets under a variety of names including taro,American taro, dasheen, malanga, yautía,and eddoe.
