Abstract: There is an emergency energy producing bypass in Escherichia coli that uses aceBAK operon regulated by the protein isocitrate lyase (IcLR) to switch from glyoxylate to pyruvate under stressful conditions. This bypass is found in many different types of bacteria and understanding the proteins involved through their structures and reactions to stimuli. This could lead to a better understanding of the complex and be used for treatment of antibiotic resistant bacteria. Using HPLC the proteins can be separated in a size exclusion column and native gels can be used to further investigate the structures of the proteins. This new method of investigation into IcLR could lead to a better understanding of the regulatory mechanism of these proteins.
