The James C. Parks Scholarship in Botanical Research

The Department of Biology at Millersville University will award a scholarship of approximately $1000.00 to an entering freshman biology major with a keen interest in botany. The recipient will develop a botanical research project in collaboration with a faculty member that will lead to the presentation of research results in the student’s senior year.

The scholarship will be awarded during the Fall semester and may be renewed for up to three additional years contingent upon the satisfactory performance of the recipient. Approximately 70% of the scholarship will be used to defray University tuition and fees for the student. The remainder will be held in an account for the student to use for materials and costs associated with his/her research project. The recipient of this award shall be designated the James C. Parks Scholar.

  • Applicants for this scholarship should meet the following criteria:
  • High school class rank in the top 10% or a GPA ≥ 3.5
  • combined SAT score ≥ 1100
  • An avid interest in plant research

Renewal of this award beyond the freshman year is contingent upon maintenance of a minimum GPA of 3.0 and continued progress in the design and execution of the student’s botanical research project, under the supervision of a Biology faculty member.

The budget section of the proposal can be left black. Use the narrative section of the application to write a brief essay describing your interest in plant biology. Please include information on:

  • what sparked your interest and how it has changed over time;
  • what you envision your involvement in the biological sciences to be in five years;
  • a description of your extracurricular activities relating to biology (such as participation in biology clubs, field trips, science fair projects, etc.)
  • any other information we may find useful in evaluating your application

Use the uploads section at the end of the application to provide:

  • The names of two high school teachers, at least one of whom has taught you inbiology or a related course. These individuals may be contacted as references.
  • Senior year grade report showing courses in progress and grades in report periodscompleted to date.
