Fierce First Generation Series
Let me tell you about an amazing program here at Millersville University, called the Fierce First Gen series, which is directed by Dr. Christina Pantoja Williams, our Director of Pre-College Programs. This series celebrates and amplifies the stories of First-Generation Alumni—those who were the first in their families to attend college. Right now, over 30% of our students are First-Generation, which shows just how important this community is at Millersville.
Gertrudis Easterling
Alum and first-gen. student shares her inspiring journey and the impact it has had on her life and career.
Now, what does it mean to be a First-Gen student? Simply put, it’s someone whose parents haven’t completed a bachelor’s degree here in the U.S. The Fierce First Gen series is all about honoring the strength, resilience, and unique challenges that First-Gen students face, and highlighting the strategies they used to succeed and graduate from Millersville.
But this isn’t just for First-Gen students. It’s also a chance for faculty, staff, and administrators to better understand how they can support students like you on your journey through college.
The best way to understand what being a First-Gen student is all about? Hear it straight from those who’ve lived it. The series features personal video stories from First-Gen students and alumni, which you’ll be able to watch. These stories are full of inspiration and motivation, and they’ll give you a real sense of what it takes to navigate the challenges of higher education as a First-Gen student. I think you’ll find them really empowering as you move forward in your own college journey.
