Dr. David Johnson, a/k/a “Mudcat,” is an Associate Professor at Millersville University. A native of Kingsport, Tennessee and a Longhorn, he is a licensed social worker in Pennsylvania where he landed in 2009 after completing his doctorate at the University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Johnson teaches primarily in the policy sequences of the BSW program at Millersville University and in the macro practice and HBSE sequences of the joint Millersville-Shippensburg MSW program. He is a mediator certified to practice before the Texas courts and has developed electives in mediation at both the undergraduate and graduate level at Millersville. He is also responsible for developing the economics boot camp and the government boot camp for the MSW program, as well as developing the Social Welfare Policy and Economics class for the BSW program.
Dr. Johnson is the coauthor with Diana M. DiNitto of Essentials of Social Welfare: Politics and Public Policy (Boston: Pearson/Allyn & Bacon, 2013) and the forthcoming Social Welfare: Politics and Public Policy, 8th Edition (Boston: Pearson/Allyn & Bacon, 2016). He has also authored or co-authored a number of instructor resources for Pearson in the policy area over the past several years. He has presented at numerous national and regional conferences. He was previously affiliated with the Health Behavior Research and Training Institute at the University of Texas at Austin. Prior to that, Dr. Johnson served as Executive Director of AIDS Services Coalition of Hattiesburg, Mississippi. He has served on numerous boards of directors in several states and currently serves on the Lancaster County Medical Foundation Board of Directors.
Dr. Johnson’s dissertation research involved an historical policy analysis comparing President Lyndon Johnson’s successful passage of Medicare and Medicaid to President Bill Clinton’s failure to pass national health care reform. Dr. Johnson has published primarily on topics in the health policy and addictions arenas. He is on the editorial board of the Journal of Groups in Addiction & Recovery where he has served as a guest editor for two issues of the journal and is the Book Review Editor. He is also a peer reviewer for that journal and for Contemporary Rural Social Work. Dr. Johnson is a member of the Council on Social Work Education, Phi Alpha Social Work Honor Society, and the Texas Exes. Hook ‘em Horns!
