Careers in Psychology

Rehabilitation psychologists are researchers and practitioners who work with people who have suffered a physical deprivation or loss, whether at birth or through later damage such as a stroke. These individuals may also aid someone in adjusting to a physical handicap associated with aging, such as a loss of mobility due to arthritis. Rehabilitation psychologists treat people by helping them to face both the psychological and situational barriers they may encounter, and they thereby facilitate individuals' more effective functioning.

Rehabilitation psychologists tend to work in medical rehabilitation institutes and hospitals. They may work in a medical school or university or serve as a consultant or an administrator for state and federal vocational rehabilitation agencies. Some have private practices serving people who have disabilities.
