  • Can I enroll part-time or do I need to be a full-time student?

  • How long do I have to complete my program?

    You must complete your program of study within five years.

  • Am I able to complete these programs while working?

    Yes, the courses are built for working professionals with online or evening courses.

  • Do I need a teaching certificate to enroll in this program?

    The certificate and the Masters program require one to hold an Instructional 1 Teaching Certificate. The endorsement program does not require a teaching certificate if the student has a Level I or II certificate, including but not limited to regular and special education, school psychologist, principal, school counselor, speech and language clinician, occupational and physical therapist, reading specialist, and home and school visitor.

  • What is the area of specialization?

    Students in the M.Ed. will choose an area of specialization approved by their advisor and take 9 credits within that field. It is useful to gain knowledge in an area of professional interest. Areas of specialization include (but are not limited to) the following: STEM, Online Teaching, Early Childhood Education, Language and Literacy, English as a Second Language, English, Foreign Languages, Leadership, Mathematics, Sciences, Social Sciences, Psychology, and Special Education.

  • What is the GPA requirement for admission?

    A 2.75 cumulative undergraduate GPA. If your GPA is lower than 3.0, the Graduate Record Exam (GRE) or Miller Analogy Test (MAT) is required.

  • Is the program offered online?

    The program can be completed online except if the student chooses an area of specialization where the courses are only offered in person.

  • Will I need to find a placement/other district for Practicum?

    Both parts of GFED 690 (Evaluation Practicum and Teaching Practicum) involve working in your own school or classroom, so students will not need to find another placement for this course.

  • Where can I find the curriculum listings for MU’s Gifted Programs?

    Scroll to the bottom of MU’s Gifted Education Homepage and click the drop-down boxes for the M.Ed, Certificate, or Endorsement option. You will also receive a copy of the curriculum upon entering the program to track your progress.

  • Do any of the GFED courses have a field placement component? If so, how do I submit my clearances?

    Yes, GFED 675 and GFED 690 have a field placement component and will require clearances. If you are currently employed be a school district, you can complete the field assignments within your own classroom/school. You will submit copies of your clearances aling with a completed PDE 6004 (submitted yearly) and Proof of Employment Form (submitted every semester).

Current Students FAQ

  • Will my program transfer to another state?

    Because both the certificate and the M.Ed. are Millersville credentials, they will transfer to other states. The endorsement is a Pennsylvania credential, so it will not transfer to another state.

  • Can I switch between programs, such as switching from the certificate to the M.Ed., or from the endorsement to the certificate?

    Yes, the courses build on each other. One could complete the endorsement and then complete the remaining courses to get the certificate or M.Ed. Additionally, one could complete the certificate and go on to complete the M.Ed.

  • If I am in the M.Ed. program and also want the endorsement do I need to apply for it?

    Yes, you need to apply for the endorsement. You may do this while you are enrolled in the last required course for the endorsement. This is the link to do so: Certification in PA
