Challenge Course
MISSION STATEMENT:
As part of the Campus Recreation Department, Outdoor Programs helps recruit and retain students, faculty and staff by providing a wide range of inclusive, safe, reasonably-priced outdoor programs and services to the MU community. We expose individuals to the natural environment, provide skill and leadership development opportunities, and facilitate interactions and fun.
THE CHALLENGE COURSE:
The Millersville University Challenge Course provides a unique teaching environment, where diverse groups can experience varying levels of physical, mental, and/or emotional risks. For a look at some of the activities watch the following videos:
The Experience
WHAT IS A ROPES COURSE CHALLENGE? The combination of activities designed for individual and group participation regardless of age, physical limitation or ability level. Low and High Ropes Courses enable participants to grow at both the team and individual levels by exploring leadership and communication concepts, problem–solving, and coaching to name a few.
The Low Ropes Course focuses on collaboration; the challenges call upon every member of the team to participate, and they present unending opportunities for self–discovery and team growth. The experience is often both physically and mentally challenging. The goal of the program is to concentrate on individual and group skill development by navigating a series of activities, which involve physical and emotional risk, and succeeding (or sometimes failing) within a supportive group atmosphere. The challenges presented by the challenge activities enhance communication skills, cooperation, interpersonal awareness, leadership skills, decision-making, and trust-building.
The High Ropes Course emphasizes risk–taking, trust, and coaching. The challenges enable participants to expand their comfort zones—sometimes dramatically—and recognize fears that may block personal achievement. Each moment is rich with discoveries, whether a person is climbing, encouraging a teammate or helping staff hold their belay line.
