- Started playing tennis at age 11 through the West Oak Lane Boys Club in Philadelphia, PA
- Joined the National Junior Tennis League (NJTL) Philadelphia Chapter and trained with elite player
- Mentored by legendary coaches such as Bill Johnson, Walter Moore, Isaac Avant, Ben Scott, John Ashurst, Jerome White, Hubie White, and Wes Hamilton
- Selected as captain of the tennis team and Thode athlete of the year at Abington Friends School in 1982
- Recruited by Coach Bill Kahler to attend Millersville University to play and help coach
- Coached four 2x NCAA All Americans and other notable players at Millersville University
- Became a tennis pro at several clubs, working with elite and nationally ranked players
- Head Coach at Franklin and Marshall College, achieving impressive records and accolades
- Selected as an inductee into the Black Tennis Hall of Fame class of 2024
- Coached dozens of District and State players, several tour players, and thousands of kids at various clubs and camps
- Ran his own camps (Jim Phipps School of Tennis) and never turned away kids due to inability to pay
- Head Coach of Franklin and Marshall Men's Team with notable records and achievements
- USTA Middle States Section Zonal Coach for 6 years, with his team winning every year
- Head Coach and Director for USTA NJTL Invitational Tennis Camp for 15 years
- WTT USTA Middle States Junior National Coach for 7 years, winning the Maureen Connolly Brinker Award twice
- Boys/Girls Tennis Coach at Lancaster Country Day School for 15 years, producing 9 State Champions and several State Finalists
