Honors, Awards, and Scholarship Opportunities
The Department of Applied Engineering, Safety & Technology at Millersville University recognizes its exemplary students. Honors are available to students in all three of the programs offered by the department for undergraduate and graduate students. The awards and recognitions come from a variety of sources including Millersville University, professional organizations, educational organizations and industry.
Awards, Honors, and Scholarships Descriptions
Awards and scholarships available to Applied Engineering, Safety & Technology students, listed in order of date of first recognition:
Philadelphia Alumni Award
Established in 1947.
Awarded to a Technology Education major who demonstrates the best qualities of a technology education teacher.
Burl N. Osburn Award
Established in 1964.
Awarded annually to a student who excels in Technology Education.
Paul W. Eshelman Memorial Scholarship
Established in 1978.
A cash award given to a junior Applied Engineering, Safety & Technology or Technology Education student for excellence in wood technology.
J. Richard Steinmetz Technology Teaching Award
Established in 1980.
Awarded to a Technology Education senior who has high potential to become a successful teacher, as evidenced by outstanding performance in student teaching and excellence in professional and technical areas.
Henry J. Kauffman Award in Metal Technology
Established in 1981.
An award granted to a senior Applied Engineering, Safety & Technology or Technology Education student who in the opinion of the Applied Engineering, Safety & Technology faculty has attained distinguished achievement in metal technology.
American Society of Safety Professionals/Raymond C. Mullin Award
Established in 1986.
Awarded each semester to an exemplary junior of senior majoring in the Occupational Safety and Environmental Health program.
William McGrorty '82 Excellence in Printing Award
Established in 1986.
This scholarship will be awarded to a senior Applied Engineering, Safety & Technology major with a minimum GPA of 3.0, who consistently produces high quality work, displays innovative ideas, and demonstrates outstanding commitment to the printing profession. First preference will be to a student working towards a BA in Graphic Communication or a B.S.E. in Technology Education within the department.
International Society of Automation Central Keystone Section - Outstanding Student Award
Established in 1989.
Awarded to a junior or senior Applied Engineering, Safety and Technology student who possesses a QPA of at least 3.0 and is committed to specializing in and demonstrating outstanding performance in transportation/energy/power. Presented by the Instrumentation Society of America, a nonprofit organization dedicated to automation professionals.
American Industrial Hygiene Association Scholarship
Established in 1992.
Awarded to students who are majoring in Occupational Safety and Environmental Health or a related discipline who have demonstrated a proclivity toward industrial hygiene.
Foundation for Technology Education - Donald Maley Spirit of Excellence Outstanding Graduate Student Citation
Established in 1996.
The International Technology and Engineering Education Association recognizes excellence in scholarship and leadership potential Technology Education. This is awarded at the graduate and undergraduate levels.
The Steinman Foundation/Intelligencer Printing Upperclassman Scholarship
Established in 2001.
Awarded to a full-time junior or senior Applied Engineering and Technology Management/Technology Education major with a demonstrated performance in graphic communication and a 3.0 GPA in the major. Administered by the Susquehanna Litho Foundation.
Susquehanna Litho Club Underclassmen Scholarship
Established in 2001.
Awarded to a full-time freshman in either the associate or baccalaureate degree program in Applied Engineering and Technology Management or Technology Education with a demonstrated interest in graphic communication. Administered by the Susquehanna Litho Foundation.
Dalton E. Smart Humanitarian Scholarship
Established in 2002.
Awarded annually to a student making a significant contribution to the education of classmates through positive interactions, thought-provoking questioning, and insight into the impact of technologies on humans. The recipient must be junior or senior with a minimum 2.5 overall QPA.
C-P Flexible Packaging, Gary Nicholas Memorial Scholarship
Established in 2003.
Awarded to a full-time rising senior in the Occupational Safety and Environmental Health program at Millersville University who matriculated from York County. The recipient must have a QPA of 3.2 or greater in the program, with consideration given to acceptable overall QPA.
The Dr. Joseph J. Abromaitis Family Student-Athlete Scholarship
Established in 2004.
Awarded to a full-time student who participates in a varsity sport program and expects to continue that participation in the year the scholarship is awarded. The recipient must maintain a 3.0 GPA and be a rising sophomore, junior, or senior.
Robert V. and Virginia K. Brown Scholarship in Industrial Technology
Established in 2006.
Awarded to a rising sophomore majoring in Technology Education or Applied Engineering and Technology Management.
Dr. Dale H. Messerschmidt Technology Education Scholarship
Established in 2007.
Awarded to the full-time sophomore with the highest GPA at the end of the first semester of his/her sophomore year in the Technology Education program.
Susquehanna Engineering & Manufacturing - Gravell Scholarship
Established in 2008.
Awarded to a freshman enrolled in an Applied Engineering, Safety & Technology program, in either the Associate or Bachelor degree program with a strong commitment to the major.
Richard S. Levandusky '58 Technology Education Scholarship
Established in 2008.
Awarded to a first year student majoring in Technology Education. First preference is given to a student from Eastern Lebanon County High School, secondly from Pennsylvania, otherwise at the discretion of the Applied Engineering, Safety & Technology faculty.
Richard F. Brenner '41 Industrial Technology Scholarship
Established in 2013.
Awarded to a rising sophomore majoring in the Applied Engineering, Safety and Technology department, with first preference going to a student receiving teacher preparation. The recipient will have a CGPA ranging from 2.5 to 3.25 and satisfy financial criteria.
American Society of Safety Engineers, Lehigh Valley Chapter Award
Established in 2014.
Awarded to an Occupational Safety & Environmental Health junior or senior with a minimum 3.0 GPA and demonstrated financial need.
Paul G. Specht Occupational Safety & Environmental Health Scholarship
Established in 2016.
Awarded to an OSEH major who has a 3.0 GPA within the major and at least a 2.5 GPA overall and who has demonstrated initiative and leadership skills or who has a unique background or experience that distinguishes the student within the discipline.
Foundation for Technology Education - Donald Maley Spirit of Excellence Outstanding Undergraduate Student Citation

Brent D. Frey Technology Education Scholarship
Established in 2018.
Awarded to one or more sophomore, junior, senior, or graduate student(s) majoring in technology & engineering education with a minimum GPA of 3.0 and demonstrated financial need. The scholarship may be renewed. Recipient to be selected at the discretion of the president or his/her designee.
Robert Clark Hosler Scholarship in Industry & Technology
Established in 2020.
Awarded to a full-time student on the basis of scholarship and academic achievement, renewable for up to eight semesters.
Harry A. ’65 & Caroyln Lohss Manufacturing Engineering Scholarship
Established in 2020.
Awarded annually to a full-time student pursuing a major in Manufacturing Engineering Technology, Applied Engineering, or Technology Management. Recipients must maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
Gene Haas Foundation EDU Scholarship
Established in 2023.
Awarded to students pursuing careers in manufacturing. One of the primary goals of the Gene Haas Foundation isto provide financial assistance for students interested in manufacturing-based careers. Foundation funding goes directly to those training programs to attract prospective students.
Wujcik Design Award
Established in 2024.
Awarded to an undergraduate or graduate AEST student who creates a product or pedagogy with primary emphasis on the discipline of design. A product is defined as a three-dimensional object at any scale. A pedagogy is defined as a teaching initiative developing a curriculum, class, lesson plan, or activity which educates students in the study of design.
Karl E. Gettle, PhD Scholarship
Established in 2024.
Awarded annually to an AEST major with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. First preference given to a first-generation student. Financial need may be considered but is not required.
