General Education Program

General Education Philosophy and Curriculum Requirements

Students who began at Millersville *before Fall 2026* follow the Legacy General Education program.
Students starting in *Fall 2026 or later* will complete the Gateway General Education program

Continuing your education at a university reflects a personal investment of time, money, and energy in preparing for your future. Choosing a major—and possibly a minor—helps tailor your knowledge and skills to your interests and goals.

But the future is unpredictable. A 2025 Future of Jobs report from the World Economic Forum estimates that 39% of existing skills will be transformed or outdated between 2025 and 2030. Preparing for that kind of change requires more than specialized knowledge.

That’s where general education comes in. General education courses are designed to build broad, adaptable skill sets that help you navigate shifting demands—new technologies, ethical challenges, and evolving expectations. Alongside your major and minor, these courses strengthen critical, creative, and analytical thinking; problem-solving; communication; and the ability to adapt and collaborate. These capacities develop over time through repeated, meaningful learning experiences and are consistently among the top skills employers seek.
