BS – Information Technology | Cybersecurity Concentration
My journey at Millersville University has been shaped by good values. As an IT/Cybersecurity student, I’ve embraced these principles in both academic and extracurricular pursuits.
Exploration has driven my passion for cybersecurity, leading me to earn my CompTIA Security+ certification and work on hands-on projects. These experiences have expanded my technical skills and critical-thinking abilities.
Professionalism has been a key focus, particularly as I prepare for my future career. Through coursework and certifications, I’ve built a strong foundation in cybersecurity.
Integrity and Compassion are integral to my learning process, whether in collaborating with peers on complex topics or navigating ethical dilemmas in cybersecurity. The support from professors and classmates has reinforced my commitment to ethical decision-making and continuous growth.
The EPPIIC values have shaped my academic and professional journey, equipping me with the skills and mindset to contribute meaningfully to the cybersecurity field. As I look ahead to graduate studies, I carry these principles with me, ready to make a positive impact.

My EPPIIC journey at Millersville University has been one of personal growth, purpose and passion. From the moment I entered the Special Education program, I knew I was exactly where I was meant to be. Millersville’s core values – Exploration, Professionalism, Public Mission, Inclusion, Integrity and Compassion – have guided every step of my path.
I’ve had the opportunity to engage deeply with real-world experiences that shaped my understanding of what it means to be an educator who truly makes a difference. From designing individualized education programs to exploring community-based supports like AHEDD and PA CareerLink for students with disabilities, each project deepened my understanding of inclusive education and how to be a strong advocate. My student teaching placement at York Suburban High School allowed me to put theory into practice, build meaningful relationships with students and witness firsthand the impact of compassion and consistency in the classroom. I’ve developed a deep sense of responsibility to uphold the public mission of education – not just teaching content, but fostering dignity, belonging and confidence in every learner. I’ve also grown more confident in my ability to lead with integrity and professionalism, whether collaborating with families, coteachers or service providers. What has meant the most to me, though, is how much this journey has affirmed my belief in the power of inclusion – creating spaces where every student is valued, supported and seen. Millersville didn’t just prepare me to teach; it prepared me to lead with heart. As I prepare to graduate and begin my career, I carry with me not only the skills and knowledge I’ve gained but a deep commitment to serve others with the same passion and care that has been poured into me.

BS – Applied Engineering and Technology Management
One key experience during my EPPIIC journey was engaging in various interdisciplinary collaborations that helped me develop both personally and professionally. Through workshops, group discussions and team activities, I learned how to integrate different perspectives into problem-solving. As a refugee student, I’ve faced unique challenges in adapting to a new life and culture, and these experiences have taught me the value of patience, perseverance and resilience.
While I didn’t work on specific projects related to construction management, I was able to connect with students from various fields and understand how their diverse knowledge could be applied to real-world challenges. This allowed me to broaden my perspective on how disciplines like ethics, communication and social responsibility intersect in both academic and professional settings. These opportunities pushed me to reflect on how I can apply these lessons to my future career in construction management, especially in communities that need it the most.
Through Millersville’s EPPIIC values, I’ve also strengthened my leadership and teamwork skills, learning how to work with others who have different ideas and approaches. The program taught me the importance of balancing professional goals with ethical considerations, which is crucial in any field. It reinforced my passion for pursuing a career that not only meets personal goals but also contributes to society’s well-being. As I move forward, I’m more determined than ever to continue learning and growing, with the ultimate goal of using my skills to improve the quality of life for others.
This journey has shaped my understanding of what it means to make a meaningful impact, both professionally and personally.

Starting college during the pandemic was one of the biggest obstacles that I had to face during my college experience. I had this overwhelming anxiety that there wasn’t anyone on campus that could relate to what it feels to be a Latina in the continental United States. My first year on campus was spent navigating what it means to be a college student and also navigating how to make friends.
My second year at Millersville was my prime year. I got to meet amazing professors who genuinely cared for my success postcollege, and I got to be part of an amazing honor fraternity that valued many of the same traits that I do, such as leadership. I always wondered how my life would be different in college had I gone to other colleges that wanted me to be part of their institution. Always wondered if they would genuinely care for me or if I’d be just another student they need to meet their diversity mark. The same thought always came to mind: Would I have truly belonged if I were to have chosen those schools? And every answer to that question was no – I wouldn’t have belonged, and I wouldn’t have had this great amount of success in school that I had with Millersville. I felt I truly belonged, was heard and was seen in my journey at Millersville. If I went back to decision day in the summer of 2020, I would’ve chosen Millersville over and over again. Millersville values diversity and it is shown in many ways that I can’t explain from even having a Latino Studies minor! My parents are alumni from Millersville, and they always raved about Millersville and how I should go there. At first, I felt like Mom and Dad, more so Dad, just wanted me close to home. But no, they were right: Millersville was the best option.

I started out my college career at Indiana University of Pennsylvania as a criminology major in August 2020. Although I had many great experiences at IUP, during my junior year I realized that it was not the best environment for me to be successful. I transferred to Millersville in spring 2023, very unsure about my decision since I grew up in Lancaster and have been in the Millersville community for most of my life.
Being a psychology major at Millersville completely changed my college experience; the faculty and staff in the department have given endless encouragement. This encouragement led me to participate in the Psychology Department Honors program, in which I was able to complete an undergraduate thesis on student retention, which I am very passionate about. I am also the chapter president of the Psi Chi International Honors Society in Psychology and a member of Millersville’s Cygnus Society. Every relationship built at this University has shifted my life in a positive direction, and I undoubtedly made the right choice transferring to Millersville.

Public Mission: I have used my skills from my learned experience and implemented them into my lectures/lessons and classroom, creating public discourse that seeks to create unity;
3. Professionalism: I have maintained a professional graduate-level work ethic with research and writing methods that carry over into accepted conference presentations and publications; 4. Inclusion: I have represented inclusion by valuing all walks of life and sharing learned experiences; 5. Integrity: I have maintained integrity by remaining steadfast in loyalty and truth both on and off campus; 6. Compassion: I have compassion because I can meet people where they are and help them.
As a working professional and as a wife and mother, my time at Millersville University has been so incredibly special. BS – Construction Management | OSHA Minor
Throughout my time at Millersville University, my eyes were opened in countless ways, and I experienced profound personal growth. The people I met – especially my teammates – taught me that while the world may seem vast, it can also feel remarkably small and interconnected. Through both laughter and hardship, long nights of studying, demanding days of practice and the simple joy of being surrounded by those who brought positivity into my life, my journey at Millersville was truly enriched.
I am especially grateful for my involvement with Millersville FCA (Fellowship of Christian Athletes). This organization had a transformative impact on my life, helping me discover a deeper sense of purpose as a follower and believer in Jesus Christ, my Lord and personal Savior.
In addition, being a member of the Black Student Union (BSU) gave me the opportunity to use my voice – not only for myself, but for others who needed to be heard. The inclusive spirit of the organization, which welcomed everyone regardless of background or skin color, exemplified the sense of family and unity that Millersville University fosters.
Millersville equipped me with essential tools for life beyond college. I learned the importance of time management and the principle that success comes through preparation. I also came to understand that failure is not a defeat but a valuable lesson that paves the way for future success. I was reminded to engage in organizations and communities with the same energy and commitment that I would hope to receive from others.
My experience on the football team taught me the true meaning of brotherhood and family. From grueling training camps to the intense highs and lows of the season, we forged a bond that is unbreakable. No matter the challenges, I always knew my brothers had my back. As one of my coaches often said, “The world may be tough and life may be hard, but when you step onto that football field, all of that fades away. For those three hours, you’re free – playing the sport you love alongside your brothers.”
Thank you, Millersville University, for shaping me into the person I am today. Thank you for strengthening my faith in Jesus Christ, for teaching me the value of brotherhood and family, and for giving me a voice – one that I’ve been able to use on behalf of others.

At 18 years old, I ran away from home to escape a religious fundamentalist household, which is similar in nature to a cult. I came to Millersville to pursue college as the first of the family to achieve higher education. Coming from this background, where women are discouraged from focusing on their careers, I was taught that my value and happiness as a woman lay in marriage and bearing children.
I always knew I wanted something different out of life, but making the decision to leave everything I had known in pursuit of my future was far from easy. Because of this, I’ve had to solely support myself throughout college, working at least two jobs at a time to get by despite many health problems along the way and healing from childhood trauma. I’ve learned through this experience that some students with unusual backgrounds must work 10 times harder to get a degree, but it is possible and there is always a way to accomplish your goals, no matter how impossible they may seem. My younger self would be so proud of how far I have come, thanks to the beautiful people I’ve met along the way that have supported me. It’s for her that I cross the stage at graduation, proud of the life I have built and all the exciting opportunities that I can now step out into, thanks to the lessons and skills I’ve learned here at Millersville.

MSW – Social Work
My EPPIIC journey at Millersville University has been one of growth, resilience and community. Born and raised in the Dominican Republic, I moved to the United States six years ago, and for the past five years, Millersville has been my academic home. As a first-generation college student and person of color, the journey has not been easy, but it has been transformative.
I began my Millersville experience with the PSSI and LSLI programs, which gave me a strong foundation and sense of belonging. These programs, along with the support of faculty, mentors and peers, empowered me to earn my Bachelor of Social Work, and now, as I prepare to graduate with my MSW, I reflect on the incredible support system that made this possible.
Through challenges, I found strength in the diverse and welcoming community at Millersville. I discovered opportunities to learn, grow and give back – helping others navigate their own paths just as I was supported in mine. My journey embodies the University’s core values of exploration, professionalism, public mission, inclusion, integrity and compassion.
As I prepare for the next chapter, I carry with me the lessons and connections I have built here. Millersville has not just been a place of education but a place where I found purpose, community and the confidence to keep striving for more.

At the age of 5, I was diagnosed with ADHD, generalized anxiety disorder and some other mental-health disorders. For me, school was always 10 times harder than it was for the average student. There was doubt that I would graduate high school, let alone graduate with my B.A. in psychology.

I am a parent and first-generation student who attended college while working two jobs. I started my journey about four years ago while going through a domestic-violence marriage and divorce, as I had put my dreams on hold to raise my two boys. My goal was to graduate with a degree before I turned 50.
I completed my BSW a month before my goal, and I said I was finished with school, only to enroll in the advanced standing MSW program five days after graduation with the help and guidance of Dr. Foels. Even though I’ve added this program, I am still completing my goal of obtaining an MSW while I’m still 50. I remember when I first realized I was part of the LGBTQIA+ community and being very scared. I wasn't sure how my friends or family would take that information or how I would be treated by strangers. Living in the current political landscape, I know a lot of my fellow community members are scared every single day. During my high school experience and into college, I recognize how important a club like GSA is to providing a safe and comfortable social space during scary times like these.
I served on the board as PR manager for Millersville University’s GSA because I wanted other people with that same fear to feel included, understood and not alone. In my social life during my time in college, I have surrounded myself with similarly queer friends who make me feel seen and supported; through our friendships, we hope to make this campus just a little bit more accepting and inviting to other queer individuals contemplating their college career. I am passionate about exploring the world through a queer lens, being a leader of professionalism within the LGBTQIA+ community, empowering and including other queer individuals like me, having the integrity to always stand up for the little guy, and having the compassion to understand the world through someone else’s shoes to truly understand the queer experience from many perspectives. Leaving Millersville University, I will continue to be authentically me and spend my life spreading love and joy to everyone under the rainbow flag.

My EPPIIC journey at Millersville has truly been one of resilience, growth and self-discovery. As a first-generation college graduate, the only queer and Black person in my immediate family and being a nontraditional student, my path was anything but linear. Initially, college was incredibly challenging, and without understanding why, I struggled profoundly. After a 13-year break, I returned to Millersville with a fresh determination and, importantly, a newfound understanding of myself following my diagnosis of ADHD. This diagnosis explained the challenges I’d faced and allowed me to adopt strategies tailored to my strengths.
Returning to academia after such a significant break required courage and adaptability. I embraced Millersville’s supportive community and resources, gaining confidence in my academic abilities. However, during my journey, I encountered one of life’s hardest challenges – the sudden loss of my mom last year. Navigating grief while staying committed to my education tested my resilience like nothing before.
Despite the immense pain, the encouragement I received from peers, faculty and the supportive community at Millersville became pivotal in my ability to move forward. My mother’s legacy and my commitment to honoring her strength fueled my determination to complete my degree. Finishing this journey represents not just academic achievement but also profound personal growth and the fulfillment of a promise made to myself and my mom.
My EPPIIC experience has equipped me with the tools to advocate for myself and others, understand the value of perseverance and see the beauty in overcoming life’s challenges. I’m proud to graduate from Millersville stronger and ready to use my experience to support others navigating similar paths.

My EPPIIC journey at Millersville has been incredibly impactful, especially as a first-generation African American Puerto Rican student-athlete. Being the first in my family to attend college, graduating means everything to me – not just for myself, but for my family, who have worked so hard to support me. The EPPIIC values have been a huge part of helping me stay grounded in my goals.
The support I’ve received from Millersville’s track and field community has been a key factor in my journey. As a student-athlete, I’ve learned the importance of perseverance, time management and teamwork. My teammates and coaches have become like a second family, and their encouragement has helped me push through the challenges that come with balancing academics and athletics.
In addition, the PSSI program has played a huge role in preparing me for college and beyond. Through PSSI, I’ve gained valuable insights into how to navigate the college experience, especially as a first-gen student. The program has also connected me with mentors and peers who share similar experiences, making me feel more supported and less alone in this journey. It’s provided me with the tools I need to thrive academically and personally while also giving me a sense of pride in my cultural heritage.
For me, this journey is about more than just earning a degree; it’s about breaking barriers and making my family proud. Thanks to the guidance from PSSI, the track and field community, and the EPPIIC values, I’m ready to finish strong and continue building a future full of opportunities.

BA – Social Work
My EPPIIC journey at Millersville University has come with many obstacles and milestones that have led me to this amazing accomplishment. As a Black woman in my Social Work courses, I acknowledge how systemic oppression impacts people in marginalized communities and the necessity to address their needs. As a student, I have faced moments of racism from individuals on campus, which have discouraged me in my journey. Although those experiences were made to hinder my focus on my education, I chose to persevere with the intention of becoming a catalyst for change in the field of social work.
I have used the opportunity in class to share my own experiences to explain how the many intersections I identify with impact my perspective of the world. Throughout my experience at Millersville, I learned about the specific resources at Learning Services as a student with accommodations. Learning Services has been extremely helpful to me because I was able to advocate for myself and my academic needs. As a student with accommodations, I was made aware that each student who receives support is assigned a personal graduate assistant who teaches students skills such as time management. Every graduate assistant has given me support by offering structure in planning for my assignments and deadlines in each course I have taken at Millersville. One of the amazing accommodations I received was getting a notetaker in each course I took. Receiving a notetaker in class was extremely useful because I was able to gain information presented in class by a peer who included material I might not have heard while in the classroom. In addition, being a student with a vision impairment, I have been blessed to receive resources from Learning Services that were beneficial to my academic experience. I was introduced to tools that could read academic articles to me, and I have been able to receive physical copies of class material so my eyes would not be strained. As a student who received accommodations at Millersville, I learned from my graduate assistants how to schedule my assignments in an organized way, such as creating a Google Sheet to write down upcoming deadlines on the day and time that I would like to finish the assignment. The various resources I have received at Millersville have truly impacted my experience and have played a role in my accomplishing this milestone in my academic career.

Being a first-generation student is difficult. You are walking down a path that is unfamiliar not to only you but your family as well. This comes with excitement but with anxiety, too. Having people around you, especially the faculty at Millersville, helping support you through every way helps ease the anxiety and motivates you to continue your journey. Always reach out, and always ask for help if you are struggling. People will be there to help you.

My journey at Millersville has had its ups and downs, but I truly thank Jesus for getting me through it all. While I was here, I was blessed with such a strong support system of faculty members who genuinely wanted to see me succeed, and contributed to the process. During my time here, I was also blessed with a wonderful community to grow, laugh and all around do life with! I am extremely grateful for all that has happened during these four years and am excited to see where the Lord takes me!

I am an African American woman and a new mom! This has been a journey so far. My son has pushed me so much to finish my degree and graduate and become a social worker! My faith, son, professors, family and friends have motivated me so much. This school has helped me so much with being a new mom and came through for me in so many ways. The social worker professors have been such a blessing to me as well as the Student Parent Scholars program. Being a mom has stopped nothing, and I want all women out there to know you can do it, too!

I am a first-generation student, which made the process of going to college a bit challenging. However, this identity has given me the opportunity to push the limits and make my family proud of all I have accomplished. I am also a member of the LGBTQ+ community, which has helped me find an amazing group of friends on campus.
One of the reasons I came to Millersville was the welcoming environment for queer students, and I am glad to have made that decision because it led to my meeting my fiancée during our freshman year. Both of these identities shaped my journey at Millersville and have made college one of the most rewarding, albeit difficult, experiences of my life.

My EPPIIC journey at Millersville University has been one of growth, challenge, and transformation—both academically and personally. From the moment I stepped on campus, I was encouraged to explore new ideas, perspectives, and opportunities. Through engaging coursework and hands-on experiences, I learned to think critically, ask meaningful questions, and push beyond my comfort zone.
Professionalism was instilled in every interaction, from classroom discussions to internships. I had the opportunity to apply what I learned in real-world settings, where I developed confidence, communication skills, and a strong sense of responsibility. Faculty mentors were instrumental in helping me prepare for life after graduation by encouraging excellence, integrity, and a commitment to lifelong learning.
Integrity has guided my academic journey and shaped my character. I’ve learned that true leadership comes from accountability and doing the right thing, even when it's hard. That lesson will stay with me wherever I go.
My time at Millersville has helped shape the person I am today—curious, driven, and grounded in values that matter. The EPPIIC values aren’t just words; they’re the foundation of the way I now approach the world.

My time at Millersville has been filled with some of the best moments. From the wonderful friends I've made to the professors who have guided me, the teammates I've played alongside, the coaches who have supported me, and everyone in the athletic department and especially the ticket office and Kyle.
All of these people have allowed me to experience an EPPIIC journey. As the graduate assistant this past year, I have grown professionally with the ticket office. I have developed curiosity through exploration in the classroom and on the field. I have found my sense of belonging here due to my friends and teammates. The kindness I have received from everyone on this campus is unmatched anywhere else. This speaks volumes to the compassion that is found on the Millersville University campus. My time at Millersville has been a journey of resilience, growth, and purpose. Becoming the first woman in my family to earn a bachelor’s degree is an achievement I carry with pride and gratitude. It’s a reflection of my strength, my persistence, and the goals I refused to give up on.
Through the EPPIIC values—Exploration, Professionalism, Public Mission, Inclusion, Integrity, and Compassion—I found a strong foundation that helped shape both my academic path and personal growth. As an environmental science major, I explored complex challenges facing our planet and developed the skills needed to be part of meaningful solutions.
Professionalism and integrity became essential as I balanced classes, projects, and preparing for a career in a field I’m passionate about. I found compassion and inclusion in the support of professors, classmates, and mentors who believed in me and helped me stay motivated, even during the most difficult moments.
This journey wasn’t always easy, but it taught me the power of perseverance and the importance of representation. I hope to inspire the next generation of women in my family to dream big and know that they, too, belong in higher education and beyond.
As I prepare for graduation, I’m proud of how far I’ve come—and even more excited for what lies ahead. My EPPIIC journey has laid the groundwork for a future built on strength, purpose, and heart.

One of the primary reasons I decided to come to Millersville University was because of its inclusivity and efforts to representat students much like myslef: a queer, hispanic, first generation student. I have found that Millersville University's campus to be extremely welcoming. I don't know if I would have felt as supported in any other school.
Millersville's College Assistance Mirgant Program (CAMP) was the first community that I had contact with. There, it was very clear that despite being a first-generation student, I would always have a place to seek advice. I would not lack guidance through this new academic world. CAMP also introduced me, not only to fellow Hispanic people, but also to people of different cultures. I feel that interacting with people of different cultural backgrounds so early into my college journey was a very crucial experience. Although I had already considered myself an open person, these connections allowed me to gain a better understanding of cultures, traditions, and regions that I hadn't known much about.
CAMP assisted me and showed me how to thrive in this academic environment, empowering me to seek other opportunities. This led me to the McNairy Library Archives and Special Collections student worker position. Here is where I have been able to build my own community of friends. This space, by far, has been the most crucial towards my success at Millersville. This student job incidentally drew in fellow queer people to that I could heavily relate to. Without them, my experience at MU would have been a fairly isolated one.

My EPPIIC journey at Millersville has been one of growth, discovery and resilience. As an international student, arriving in a new environment came with many challenges, but it also opened doors to opportunities I never imagined. Through the support of faculty, classmates and friends, I found my voice, built confidence and embraced my passion for biology – especially in research and lab work.
The EPPIIC values shaped my experience in meaningful ways. I explored new areas of science, engaged in research and developed the confidence to ask questions and seek answers. Professionalism and integrity became guiding principles in my academic journey. Inclusion and compassion were present in every classroom, and I always felt seen, welcomed and supported.
This journey was not always easy, but it was deeply rewarding. Millersville helped me grow not only as a student but also as a person. BS – Manufacturing Engineering Technology | OSEH minor
My journey at Millersville University has been shaped by the EPPIIC values – Exploration, Professionalism, Public Mission, Inclusion, Integrity and Compassion. Each of these values has helped guide me through both challenges and achievements during my time here.
As a senior majoring in Manufacturing Engineering Technology, I’ve had the opportunity to explore my passions both inside and outside the classroom. I’ve served as the vice president of the National Society of Black Engineers, the American Society of Safety Professionals, and the Construction Club. These leadership roles have allowed me to grow professionally and connect with students who share my drive to make a positive impact.
One of my most meaningful experiences was organizing a coat drive that collected over 250 coats for the Lancaster Food Hub. Being able to give back to the community in such a tangible way really brought the value of Public Mission and Compassion to life for me.
Being named a Newman Civic Fellow was another huge honor and a turning point in my college experience. It recognized not just my leadership but also my commitment to civic engagement and helping solve real-world problems. This recognition helped me reflect on my journey, one that hasn’t always been easy, but one I’m proud of. I worked hard to fund my own education and turned early academic setbacks into fuel for growth.
Millersville has given me a place to lead, to serve and to become the best version of myself. The EPPIIC values aren’t just words; they’ve truly been the foundation of my experience.

People thought I was crazy to jump into an advanced-standing MSW program, just five days after graduating from East Stroudsburg University with a BSW … ESPECIALLY because I am a mother of two (at the time, only 3 and 5 years old), a wife and a full-time employee. I knew in my soul that I needed to do this.
I only applied to seven different universities and programs and was accepted to them all. All seven of them … I could not believe it. I was going to have to start a spreadsheet to weigh my options. Tuition and completion time were the main determinants. After I called MU 15,000 times with my list of questions, they were so patient, and I knew that I needed to be here. I wanted to be an MU alumni.

Before I came to Millersville, I was unsure about my future and was ultimately stuck at a crossroads. Decisions weighed over my head and prevented me from witnessing my full potential. Furthermore, the aftermath of the pandemic left me with little desire to continue my academics. I finished high school unmotivated and undecided. Ultimately, the experiences, people, connections and values that I have gained have made me a better person. I am glad to call Millersville University my home.
At the time, I believed college was just another step in the process, something one does to achieve a milestone. However, that belief changed once I committed to Millersville University. I quickly realized that all the hard work I put in during high school was commendable, but it would take even more effort to fulfill my dreams.
The first thing I learned as an incoming freshman was the EPPIIC values. I will never forget learning about those core values during my 8 a.m. seminar course. At the time, those values were something to strive for and embrace as a student. As I prepare to close another chapter, I can confidently say that my journey at Millersville University has been EPPIIC. In my four years here, I was able to build new relationships and explore new areas of study. I had the support of the entire women’s track and field team at my disposal. The relationships I built with those beautiful people will last a lifetime. Additionally, after my first semester, I found my field of study and haven’t looked back since.

Millersville University has empowered me to grow into the most authentic and capable version of myself. Through meaningful relationships with faculty, peers and community partners, I’ve earned leadership roles that allow me to serve both campus and the greater Lancaster area. These experiences have helped me develop professional skills while engaging in impactful, purpose-driven work.
As someone committed to education, I’ve centered my community efforts on creating equitable opportunities for future educators and uplifting underserved students through the Color of Teaching Mentorship Program. My desire to become a secondary English teacher is rooted in compassion. After losing my father at age 12, it was the unwavering kindness of my teachers that helped me navigate grief. Their support continues to inspire my mission to be that same steady presence for my students.
As an athlete on Millersville’s women’s track and field team, I’ve proudly represented our University alongside teammates who embody discipline, commitment and pride. School spirit may seem simple, but I see it as a powerful force – one that fosters belonging and connection. I bring that same energy into all my work, including my role with the Bench Mark Program in Lancaster, where I tutor youth in English, help with college applications and guide student-athletes as they pursue their goals.
Millersville’s value of exploration has taken me across the country – to New Mexico, Illinois and New York – and abroad to Italy and Greece, where I expanded my global perspective through academic travel.

I came to MU as a transfer student in 2022 after being almost totally online for the first three years of my college experience due to COVID. This turbulent time, as well as the unexpected shift to an online modality, almost led me to drop out. But I graduated from HACC with my associate degree in Social Services.
Once I transferred to MU, I earned my undergraduate degree in Social Work in 2024 while taking graduate courses at the same time, and was accepted into the MSW program here at MU, completing it in a year. In April, I was offered a position as a school-based outpatient therapist in Hempfield School District with Community Services Group. MSW – Social Work
My name is Courtney Ledgard, and this is my story. Born with ADHD and a rare cognitive processing disorder, I’ve faced unique challenges in how I learn, process and navigate the world. From a young age, everyday academic and social expectations often felt overwhelming. Remembering instructions and details, following multistep tasks and understanding information have always required me to work differently – and often much harder – than those around me. But through it all, I’ve never given up on myself. At Millersville University, I truly feel that what once felt like a curse is now my superpower.
At Millersville, I felt like I wasn’t just surviving; I was thriving. The faculty, staff and my peers embraced me for who I am, and they helped me discover my purpose in social work. This major has been a perfect fit – not only because of the wide range of meaningful career options it offers but because it aligns so well with my strengths: empathy, understanding and a deep passion for helping others who are just like me.
Today, I work with adults with disabilities – many of whom walk similar paths to mine – at Living Unlimited in Harrisburg, Pa. It’s a full-circle moment: the girl who went from being on a 504 plan and being behind in school to now graduating as a published author with academic awards and a Master of Social Work degree.
Millersville University didn’t just educate me; it empowered me. It showed me that my differences are not obstacles, but gifts. And because of that, I’m walking into the future not only proud of how far I’ve come but excited for what’s still ahead.

MSW – Social Work
In 2020, I made the life-changing decision to return to school, uncertain if completing my associate degree at Harrisburg Area Community College was even possible. As a mother of five, a bereaved parent and the spouse of someone with a life-threatening heart condition, I faced significant personal challenges. Only weeks into my program, the COVID-19 pandemic began, and I found myself navigating virtual classes while supporting my own children and three others I babysat.
Despite the chaos, I earned my associate degree in December 2019. At the time, I was caring for my child with intensive therapeutic needs and grieving a second-trimester pregnancy loss. I stepped away from school, uncertain if I’d return. Then came an unexpected letter: I had received the APAT Scholarship to transfer to a PASSHE university. It felt like a sign. I chose Millersville University.
I arrived with the intent to simply earn my degree and move on. Instead, I found inspiration. Professors encouraged me to grow, invited me to events and pushed me beyond what I believed I could achieve. Joining the Cygnus Society helped me develop leadership and confidence. Through the BASW to MSW accelerated program, I began graduate coursework early and gained the courage to pursue my master’s degree.
Opportunities like conferences, events, trainings and becoming a fellow at the Center for Civic Responsibility and Leadership further shaped my journey. As a graduate assistant in University Relations and Strategic Initiatives, I gained valuable professional skills and knowledge. Even through new hardships – my husband’s extended hospital stay this year and becoming a caregiver to another family member – I persevered, thanks to the unwavering support of my family, peers and Millersville University community.
Today, I stand proud and humbled, preparing to earn my MSW – an achievement made possible by resilience, community and hope.

My time at Millersville has not only educated me and given me skills in my chosen field but has actively pushed me to be a better person. Inclusion, compassion, and exploration are important values to me, and I am proud to be part of a university that emphasizes these values. As an LGBTQ+ and disabled student, I’ve faced many challenges, but I’ve strived to push through them.
I’ve been able to meet people and communities that make me feel welcomed, and I hope I’ve been able to make others feel welcomed as well. Millersville has given me opportunities to move out of my comfort zone and explore experiences that I never thought would be possible, such as attending the UN’s Commission on the Status of Women in New York. I’ve utilized professionalism and integrity through my classes, my recent internship and my previous on-campus job at the Office of Grants, Sponsored Programs, and Research. When I first attended a freshman orientation at a different university in 2019, a professor seemed to tell me that college might not be right for me since my high school education was lacking due to mental health issues. This year, I get to look back at the very start of my college experience and know that they were wrong. Despite all the challenges, I have made it through. While it has taken me more years than most to graduate, I’m proud to be where I am and to be who I am. I’m grateful more than ever to everyone that has helped me along the way – especially my family and the Millersville community.

My journey at Millersville University has been incredible. I was able to grow as a student, peer and a professional through the numerous conversations and challenges presented academically and socially. Millersville has shown me that you can be yourself, and you will be accepted as you are. This campus has a great diversity of students with different backgrounds who come to one place to share their experience and gain knowledge of the professional world.
I am thankful that I have been part of the community who embraces exploration, values public mission, practices professionalism, and respects inclusion, integrity and compassion. Over the last four years, I have been in a variety of clubs, organizations, courses and events on campus, including being part of the Cygnus Society, being the secretary of First Gems and Bowling Club, a member of Math Club, and speaking at educational events. However, what makes Millersville Millersville is the environment that the students, faculty and staff create. The faculty and staff have inspired my professional growth and compassion to others through the small moments in and out of the classroom. Drs. Wubah remind the community about our public mission and integrity with their actions and event speeches, and the students speak and engage on exploration and inclusion in the University. It is really emphasized by organizations, clubs and sports to have students engage and participate in an extracurricular activity besides courses to enjoy their college experience even more. My EPPIIC journey at Millersville University has been a great four years through my encounters with the students, the president, the first lady, the President’s office, and the faculty and staff at Millersville.

MSW – Social Work
I began the full-time, in-person Master of Social Work (MSW) program at Millersville University in May 2023. Just a few months into the two-year program, my life took an unexpected turn when I was diagnosed with cancer. The news was a complete shock – up to that point, I had felt healthy, energized and was thrilled to be pursuing my dream. Despite the emotional and physical toll, I quickly had to accept my new reality, meet with doctors and make important decisions regarding treatment.
Shortly before fall break, I underwent my first surgery, which, unfortunately, was not successful. After winter break, I opted for a more extensive surgery to fully remove the cancer, which required an eight-week recovery period. During this difficult time, I stayed in close communication with my professors. I requested special permission to remain in the in-person program rather than transitioning to the online format, as the strong connections I had built with my cohort provided a much-needed sense of community and continuity. With Dr. Granruth’s support, I was allowed to attend classes via Zoom while I recovered, and my professors graciously accommodated my needs.
The compassion, encouragement and flexibility I received from the Social Work faculty were beyond anything I could have imagined. They consistently encouraged me to prioritize my health while also giving me the tools and flexibility to stay engaged with my coursework and remote practicum. This gave me purpose, structure and hope. I felt seen, supported and truly valued.
I’m proud to share that I am now cancer-free and just days away from graduating with my MSW! I am forever grateful to the faculty and staff – especially Patience Buckwalter, Jostalynn Parry, and Drs. Laura Granruth, Heather Strohman, Jennifer Frank, Kathleen Walsh, Abigail Wilson, Marc Felizzi and Heather Girvin – for their kindness and unwavering support during my journey.

MSW – Social Work
My journey through Millersville’s MSW program has been both deeply personal and transformative. Millersville’s MSW program and the EPPIIC values didn’t just prepare me to be a better social worker; they helped me grow into a more grounded, empathetic and purpose-driven individual.
Exploration: Coming into the MSW program, I had no idea which direction I wanted to go, but throughout my internship with a hospice agency, I discovered my passion. This experience pushed me to explore the complexities of end-of-life care, grief and what it means to truly support individuals through the most vulnerable times of their life.
Professionalism: Working in hospice taught me to maintain composure, empathy and ethical standards in emotionally intense situations. I learned to advocate for clients while developing a deeper sense of professionalism that I know will shape the rest of my career.
Public Mission: Millersville’s emphasis on service and community prepared me for my fieldwork. Supporting individuals and families at the end of life reminded me that social work isn’t just a profession; it’s a mission rooted in dignity, justice and humanity.
Inclusion: No two families or stories are alike. I had the honor of serving individuals from diverse cultural, spiritual and socioeconomic backgrounds. Millersville taught me the importance of listening and meeting people where they are.
Integrity: My internship required me to navigate ethically complex situations with grace and clarity. Integrity meant holding space for both my professional responsibilities and my own emotional responses.
Compassion: This value became the core of my journey. Supporting patients and families in hospice deepened my empathy in ways no classroom could teach. It taught me that compassion isn’t just about being kind; it’s about being present, being real and being human, even in the hardest moments.

Starting grad school at Millersville University as the first person in my family to pursue a graduate degree was a milestone that felt both exciting and overwhelming. At just 22, fresh out of undergrad and being one of the youngest in my cohort, I walked into rooms with peers who had a lot more professional and life experience than I did.
I carried the weight of my family’s pride, but also the pressure of being the first to do it and navigate this journey. This journey has been far from easy. While I am passionate about my field, the demands of graduate-level work, as well as balancing an internship and graduate assistantship, quickly took a toll on my mental health. Anxiety, self-doubt and imposter syndrome quickly crept in, and there were moments where I questioned if I truly was meant to be on this path. The supportive environment that I have found at Millersville became a lifeline. I have found amazing staff members, professors and my amazing cohort of peers, who have listened, encouraged and supported me every step of the way. During this journey, I have learned to prioritize my well-being alongside my academic goals, the strength in vulnerability, power in resilience, and the ability to lean on and trust those around you. Graduating with my master’s degree within a year, as the first person in my family and at only 22, has become more than just a personal achievement. I am leaving with more than just a degree. I am leaving with resilience, clarity, a voice that I have finally learned to trust and people that I now will have in my life forever. This journey has not been perfect, but it is mine, and I am so glad that I went on it!

My EPPIIC journey at Millersville has been one of healing, rediscovery and deep personal growth. Although I completed my undergraduate degree elsewhere, I came to Millersville to pursue my Master of Social Work while still recovering from a cancer diagnosis I received during undergrad. At that time, I was relearning how to walk, how to connect with others and how to move forward, and Millersville became the place where that healing truly began.
This University, its staff and my peers created an environment that allowed me to thrive. Faculty were understanding and compassionate, extending deadlines when needed and ensuring that classrooms were accessible. Instead of putting my career on pause, Millersville gave me the space, time and support to grow without compromising my health or ambitions.
Millersville also holds a special place in my heart because it’s where my grandmother went to school. Being here gave me a sense of connection to her; in many ways, studying here helped me feel closer to her and deepen that bond.
Moving to a new town and starting over could have been isolating, but fellow SOWK students were the first people I met, and they welcomed me as if I had been with them for the past four years. I have had the opportunity to create so many meaningful and fulfilling relationships.
Social work is more than just a profession; for me, it’s a calling. Having the opportunity to help others from a trauma-informed perspective, rooted in the values that Millersville helps foster, is an incredible honor. This journey has shown me the power of resilience, inclusion and community, and I am endlessly grateful to have experienced that here.

MSW – Social Work
As a first-generation Hispanic student, starting my master’s at Millersville was one of the proudest – and scariest – moments of my life. I came in feeling nervous being the first in my family to take this step.
In the beginning, I stayed quiet in class. I didn’t want to say the wrong thing or stand out. But little by little, that changed. My professors encouraged me to speak up, and I realized my experiences were valuable, not something to hide.
I found support in classmates and mentors who believed in me even when I struggled. They helped me grow not just academically but personally.
Being at Millersville taught me that my background is a strength. It shaped my perspective, my work ethic and my passion to help others. I learned that leadership isn’t about being the loudest in the room; it’s about being authentic, listening and using your story to lift others up.
Now, as I graduate with my master’s, I don’t just feel proud; I feel empowered. Millersville gave me the space to grow, to lead and, most importantly, to find my voice.

MSW – Social Work
My journey at Millersville University has been shaped by the EPPIIC values of Exploration, Professionalism, Public Mission, Inclusion, Integrity and Compassion, each one guiding me in becoming the leader I am today.
I’ve deepened my understanding of who I am and how I want to serve. I embraced challenges, asked hard questions and found strength in pushing beyond my comfort zone in exploring the various concepts and topics within the social work field. In moments of uncertainty, I learned how to lead with purpose – in my organization, in my community and in my home. I don’t just talk about values; I strive to live them daily.
Through the value of public mission, I was inspired to align my work with community impact. I have been able to turn my education into action – supporting youth and families with intention and heart. I learned from others’ experiences and worked to create spaces where all voices matter. I saw firsthand how inclusion drives true change.
Integrity and compassion anchored me during difficult decisions. Balancing multiple roles demanded honesty, accountability and staying grounded in my values while also learning that empathy is a powerful tool for healing and transformation.
I’m deeply grateful to my children, my family and my circle of friends, who continuously challenged me to grow, press forward and advocate – not just for others, but for myself. As I prepare to graduate in just a few short weeks, I will leave with more than a degree. I carry a mission: to connect families, impact communities and walk out these values every day.

Entering into a master’s-level program was quite terrifying. Not only was I able to complete my program with exceptional grades, I also maintained my full-time working status as a single mother of two. While I’m not the first to graduate college in my family, I am the first to graduate from a master’s program. My amazing children gave me the motivation to keep moving forward and show them that all things are possible when you set your mind to it!

I transferred to Millersville my junior year of my undergraduate degree and had such positive experiences that I decided to come back and complete a graduate degree. I have been a member of the field hockey team and have worked multiple on-campus jobs, including most recently my graduate assistantship with the international admissions department.
Millersville has been such an important part of my journey in the United States, with the EPPIIC values being at the forefront. Coming from another country to a school that highlighted its inclusive nature was what drew me to Millersville. My different perspectives and life back in Australia have always been something that was valued and a point of conversation for everyone I have interacted with throughout my journey. Millersville has also prepared me to enter the world after graduation through their emphasis on professionalism. I completed both my undergraduate and graduate degrees here at Millersville, and I would say that I feel incredibly prepared to enter the workforce due to the expert knowledge, emphasis on academic excellence, and focus on providing students with skilled and dedicated educators and staff. Throughout all my classes, there has also been an emphasis on integrity when it came to completing my work. This has then translated, as it has shown me the importance of having integrity in all aspects of my life. It is crucial for building trust, maintaining strong relationships and fostering ethical behavior. The EPPIIC values, in my opinion, have created an extremely positive environment and have the goal of not just having students gain degrees but also shaping them into individuals, and will have positive impacts in their lives after Millersville.

College life has been one of the most transformative phases of my life. I was nervous and excited when I first joined the campus, some of which felt new. But as time went on, this unfamiliar place became my second most familiar. Academically, college allowed me to step outside of my comfort zone.
I grew from an introverted and shy person to someone who can talk to people confidently and enjoys making friends. I also learned how to manage my practice better, face challenges head-on and solve problems. Late nights studying, presentations and endless coffee sessions became my daily routine, but what made it worthwhile was when an idea came to me and a project turned out better than expected.
Outside the classroom, I also tried to participate in extracurricular activities to increase my connection to the school. My time at Marauder Fund has helped me improve my public speaking skills, understand how to conduct stock searches and enhance my leadership skills. I also made friends with people from different backgrounds and made unforgettable memories.
Of course, I faced a lot of self-doubt, homesickness and setbacks during these experiences. But these trials and tribulations have taught me how to understand my strengths and weaknesses better so that I can find my way of learning and grow as a whole person.
Now that my college journey is ending, I look back with gratitude. College is more than just classes and exams; I have found myself, made lifelong friends and learned valuable knowledge beyond the textbook. It is an experience that I will proudly never forget.

MSW – Social Work | Expressive Arts Therapy Certificate
My EPPIIC journey at Millersville has been one of transformation, healing and deep commitment. As a Black, Mexican, Hawaiian and Portuguese woman, I carry with me the strength of my ancestors and a calling to support others through creative and therapeutic work. I started graduate school as a part-time student while working a full-time job, balancing responsibilities, deadlines and personal healing. Over time, I made the courageous decision to leave traditional full-time work and fully commit myself to the learning process as a full-time student. That shift allowed me to deepen my studies, integrate my passions and truly immerse myself in this journey.
My internship at Lone Oak Animal-Assisted Therapeutic & Educational Services became a space where my academic and personal growth merged. I brought in my background in sound healing and expressive arts and created group experiences that helped others connect, regulate and reflect. I supported children and families in nature-based settings, led sound meditations and found my voice as both a learner and a facilitator. Each step reaffirmed that healing can happen through presence, creativity and community.
The EPPIIC values of Compassion, Integrity and Exploration have shown up in every part of my path. I’ve faced challenges with resilience and emerged with a deeper understanding of my purpose. I’m proud of the risks I took to honor this calling, and I’m grateful for the professors, peers and mentors who believed in my vision. This celebration brings new beginnings, rooted in the strength of where I come from and the hope in where I’m going.

Millersville University gave me a “second chance” in my educational life. I moved to the United States four years ago after completing two years of college in my country, the Dominican Republic. I wasn’t sure if I was going to be able to complete my degree at that point. Thankfully, I found MU and decided that it was the place where I was going to complete my dream of becoming the first person in my family with a college degree.
In this two years at MU, I was able to meet incredible people with amazing talents and skills. I also had the pleasure of having amazing teachers who taught me more than I expected to receive for my future career. In 10 days, I leave MU with experiences that I will never forget.
