Minor in Physics
Physics Minor
A minor in physics is a great option for students in any STEM field that is interested a deeper understanding of the physical principles that form the basis of chemistry, biology, astronomy, and earth sciences. It is also a good choice for students interested in pursuing advanced degrees in any of those fields.
Required courses for the minor:
- PHYS 231 - Physics I with Calculus
- PHYS 232 - Physics II with Calculus
- PHYS 233 - Modern Theories of Waves and Particles
- PHYS 334 - Macroscopic Phenomena and Thermodynamics
- PHYS 335 - Multiparticle Quantum Systems and Statistical Physics
- MATH 161 - Calculus I
- MATH 211 - Calculus II
- MATH 311 - Calculus III
Heliophysics and Space Weather Minor
A newly developed minor program in Heliophysics and Space Weather is an interdisciplinary field that combined physics and earth science. The study of the Sun and its effects on the Earth is a growing field that requires a broad understanding of physics and meteorology. We need to know how the Sun creates and releases energy and particles and how they can affect our weather patterns. This program will be officially within the Earth Sciences department, but should be of interest to physics majors as well.
Prerequisite for the program - C or higher in PHYS 231 and 232 (Physic I & II with Calculus)

- Or ESCI 341 - Atmospheric Thermodynamics
- PHYS 321 - Electromagnetic Fields I
- PHYS 322 - Electromagnetic Fields II
- PHYS 335 - Multiparticle Quantum Systems and Statistical Physics
- ESCI 440 - Space Weather and the Environment
Recommended, but not required:
- PHYS 435 - Statistical Physics
