Research Interest(s):

Research projects included 1) topics in biochemical and molecular endocrinology; 2) biotic exploration in Brazil and East Africa; and 3) medicinal chemistry of antimalarial drugs. This research was funded by grants from various federal and international agencies such as the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the World Health Organization (WHO), the Contraception Research and Development Program (CONRAD), and the International Organization of Chemical Sciences in Development (IOCD). Students that were in the University Honors Program or who were interested in Biology Department Honors projects were encouraged to apply for Research Fellowships funded through my research grants. Fellowships included a stipend and the work was often published in research journals with the students as co-authors. Students were involved in every step of the research projects from how to write a grant to publishing and presenting the results. In addition, students were involved in organization of international conferences, including travel to the conferences.
