About the Exhibition ...

This body of ceramic work has been a breakthrough for me because I have been able to marry new and old techniques to work through and discover my own artistic style, one that values form, technique, intricacy, and balance.  Each piece in this collection has been thrown on the wheel and then coated in a jet-black underglaze.  From there I either used the process of sgraffito to carve stylized geometric and nature inspired patterns into my pieces, or I worked with gesturally and loosely applying white slip over the underglaze.  In both cases, my thought process was to use these techniques to accentuate, not dominate my forms. Both of these techniques also served as the vehicle through which I explored the concept of surface decoration, something which I have not focused on before, but which I wanted to experiment with to see how I could further elevate my work beyond the solely functional pots I had focused on creating in the past.  I then utilized a black and white color palette in this body of work to focus my pieces, add contrast, and emphasize the surface decorations.  The goal throughout the entirety of my making process was to push myself beyond functionality and explore the surfaces I was working with, not only in the technical sense, but also in design, appearance, and concept.
