About the Exhibition ...

“Permission” refers to the journey that Mary Kay Witmer allowed herself to explore as she expanded her voice as an Artist and jewelry designer while attaining her BFA degree at Millersville University. Witmer’s concentrated studies in Fine Art Metals revealed her passion for using natural environments as source material when developing 3D works and imagery. Many of her pieces refer to the voids and open spaces between vines and tree limbs that she photographs and refers to as “Organic networks”. Mary Kay further expanded her “Organic Networks” concepts when applying them to a variety of printmaking techniques and large-scale paintings. This exhibit demonstrates how she refines her visions of nature through both direct observation and abstract interpretations. Mary Kay’s show will feature her multi-faceted body of work, which includes prints, paintings, plexiglass sculptures, and metalwork.

About the Artist ...

Lancaster-based artist Mary Kay Witmer graduated from Pennsylvania College of Art and Design in 1989 and is currently working towards her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree at Millersville University. She has developed her jewelry-making skills and instructed beaded jewelry design for 18 years at The Beadworks in Lancaster, PA. While completing her degree at Millersville University, Witmer has focused on printmaking and a wide array of metal fabrication techniques, such as cutting and setting gemstones and multiple color applications for metal. Her most recent series, “Illuminated Networks,” is a compilation of laser-cut sculptures and jewelry designs using hand-assembled layers of boldly colored plexiglass.
