Severe Thunderstorm Safety
Severe Thunderstorm Watch
- Conditions are favorable for the development of storms that may contain large hail and damaging winds.
Severe Thunderstorm Warning
- A storm with large hail and/or damaging winds has been indicated by radar or spotted approaching the area
What you should do:
- Move indoors away from windows
- Get inside as soon as you hear thunder
Tornado Safety
Tornado Watch
- Conditions are favorable for developing storms to have the potential to produce a tornado in the area
Tornado Warning
- Rotation has been detected by radar or a tornado has been observed in the area
- Get inside, get down, and cover up
- Get into the middle of the building and underground, if possible
Wind Alert
Wind Advisory
- Winds of at least 30 mph with gusts over 50 mph are expected. Motorists should use extra caution.
High Wind Warning
- A high wind warning means a hazardous high wind event is expected or occurring. Sustained win speeds of at least 40 mph or gusts of 58 mph or more can lead to property damage.
Flood Alert
Advisory
- Some smaller creeks and streams may rise enough to flood in some areas.
Watch
- A local river has the potential to overtop its banks and flood the surrounding area
Warning
- A local river is about to or is currently flooding over its banks
Winter Weather
Winter Weather Advisory
- Periods of snow will cause primarily travel difficulties. Be prepared for snow covered roads and limited visibilities and use caution while driving
Winter Storm Watch
- Conditions are favorable for severe winter weather. If you must travel in the watch area carry an extra flashlight, food, water, and blankets in case of emergency.
Winter Storm Warning
- For heavy snow means severe winter weather conditions are expected or occurring. Significant amounts of snow are forecast that will make travel dangerous. If you must travel keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency
Blizzard Warning
- Sustained or frequent winds of 35 mph or higher with considerable falling and/or blowing snow that frequently reduces visibility to ¼ of a mile or less. These conditions are expected to prevail for a minimum of 3 hours.
Freezing Rain Advisory
- Rain that freezes on contact is forecast but a significant accumulation is not expected. However, even small amounts of freezing rain or freezing drizzle may cause significant travel problems.
