Graduating as Valedictorian of a class of 279 was very rewarding because all my years of hard work paid off. I definitely made my family proud - which feels great.
As Valedictorian did you have to prepare a speech for graduation, and if so what was the message of your speech to your fellow graduating class mates?
I prepared a short speech for graduation in which I congratulated the class of 2013 for making it to this point in their life.
What made you choose to come to Millersville University?
I chose to come to Millersville University for several reasons. The Marine Biology program is what first got me interested in Millersville. I was also impressed because Millersville is among the highest ranked public universities in Pennsylvania. Millersville is also not far from home, which is a great convenience.
What do you like about Millersville’s campus?
I really like the landscape of the campus. Being surrounded by nature makes me comfortable, unlike the crowded city atmosphere. I also really like that getting to class is not that far of a walk. I am not sure how I would have adjusted to a bigger campus. The small campus provides an atmosphere of being a community.
Are any of your friends attending Millersville?
A few of my friends will are attending and in addition to people I have known for years, I am glad to have met new friends through networking with people in class, the dorm and other activities.
What are you most concerned about at college?
I’m somewhat nervous about maintaining my schedule while at college. There are so many responsibilities to take care of and activities to be involved in. After finishing one semester so far, I am still learning how to balance a schedule, but so far so good.
Were you involved in any extra-curricular activities in high school?
I was involved in several extra-curricular activities in high school. Some clubs that I participated in were the Latino Heritage Club, Environmental Club, and the 4-H Paws and Claws Club. I also volunteered at the Highmark Caring Place and in my school’s library.
There are over 100 clubs and organizations at Millersville, and students are highly encouraged to get involved. Have you joined any?
So far, I am involved with the Latino Student Leadership Institute and attended a few meeting of the biology club. This spring break I traveled with the Ocean Science club to the Marine Science Consortium to do some volunteering, and I think I will be joining the Ocean Science Club because it was a great experience.
What did you want to be when you were growing up?
When I was growing up, my career interests shifted from being a veterinarian, a pharmacist, and a marine biologist. My career interests were related to science most of the time.
