Lauren Kriebel

Where did you go to high school?
I went to Perkiomen Valley High School in Collegeville, Pa.

Why did you choose to come to Millersville University?
I chose to come to Millersville because of the great education program and the beautiful campus.

What is your year and major?
I am a junior and an early childhood and special education dual major.

What group activities, teams, and organizations are you involved in on campus?
I am the president of the Student Pennsylvania State Education Association (SPSEA) and an active member of the University Honors College.

How did you find out about the Nolt Family Scholarship?
I was given the application by Dr. Dennis Downey, the head of the University Honors College, as an opportunity to fund my thesis research on the "Flipped Classroom."  That's where students get their instruction on their own at home through videos and handouts.  Then, in the classroom teachers interact with the students and help them apply it.

Why did you decide to apply for the scholarship?
The scholarship would allow me to vastly expand my research on the Flipped Classroom by funding the thesis tuition and presentation at great education conferences across Pennsylvania.

What were some of the requirements and characteristics that you had to fulfill for the scholarship?
The requirements for this scholarship were a junior pursuing an education degree in the School of Education, a minimum GPA of 3.0 and financial need. The scholarship required that students get involved with presenting their innovative research in the educational field at conferences to expand knowledge of the topic.

How did you find out that you had received this scholarship? How did you react?
I was very excited to be informed of the award from Dr. Dennis Downey. I was actually home at the time, so my family also got to experience the excitement with me. This is a huge opportunity for me to expand my knowledge of a new method, which is why receiving this scholarship is so great.

How will this scholarship benefit your education?
This scholarship will benefit my education because it allows me to gain hands-on experience with school districts in the area and learn a great deal about a new method of teaching in education. By doing this research, not only will I be able to analyze the effectiveness of the Flipped Classroom, but I will also be able to better the educational community by presenting a new way of teaching that could increase student performance.

Anyone you would like to thank for the scholarship?
I would like to thank Dr. Oliver Dreon, Dr. Jennifer Shettel and Dr. Dennis Downey for helping me to apply for this scholarship and for aiding me along the way in my thesis research.
