Brittany Muscato '13 - Music Business Technology

Brittany Muscato graduated summa cum laude in 2013 with a Bachelor’s degree in Music Business and Technology. During her time at Millersville, Muscato helped develop Marauder Music Productions (formerly First Dimension Records) and interned at Cyber PR in New York City. Since graduating, she has worked at Florida Grand Opera, applying the program’s three-fold process of being a performer, an educator, and an entrepreneur to her arts management. She knew the MBT program would help her already strong marketing skills, particularly in event promotion and artist management. Muscato felt that to realize her potential, she needed to take advantage of activities beyond the classroom. “The university presents so many opportunities outside of the classroom that not only prepared me for the real world but also set me apart from my colleagues. Instead of having virtually having the same resume, get the professional contacts you need to set you apart,” she said.

Interview

What made you decide to come to Millersville University?
A variety of reasons. Staying close to my family was important but I also wanted to make sure I was getting the best education possible. During my campus tour I met with Assistant Department Chair, and I really liked the path the Music department was going. They were in their old building and they were about to break ground on construction of the new one. It was a big period of opportunity and growth and I knew I wanted to be a part of that!

What was one of your biggest accomplishments during your time at Millersville?
I had two primary accomplishments. One is that I felt I helped to improve the overall brand of the music business and technology field. It was already significantly improving due to new faculty and staff and the new state-of-the-art recording studios. However, I really put my time and effort into developing First Dimension Records (which changed its name to Marauder Music Productions.) I also worked very closely with the Launch Music Conference. Another accomplishment that I was proud of was my senior recital. The program stresses being a performer, an educator, and an entrepreneur. I wanted to take that three-fold process to my senior recital, which I turned into a lecture recital about how to brand and market classical music for millennials.

Were you involved in any internships or student research during your time here?
My first internship was with Cyber PR in Brooklyn, New York. At the time it was solely an independent artist PR firm that focused on getting artist placement on blogs, podcasts, and other digital media. The company has started to accept authors and any independent entrepreneurs. I was hired as their director of branding in an independent contractor capacity. I worked with them throughout my senior year and for about a year afterward. Also, during my final semester, I had a part-time internship at the Ware Center in Lancaster as their marketing coordinator.

How did your music education at Millersville prepare you for your career in arts management?
It all came down to that three-fold approach that the program really drove into us. I wanted music to be a part of my life. Through Millersville, I really came to learn that, while I loved performing, I really wanted to become an advocate for the arts more than anything. I got my rush working with artists and helping them realize their potential. It was the MBT program that really helped me realize I have strong skills in marketing; in particular, I was drawn to event promotion and artist management.

Overall, how did Millersville get you to where you are today?
I feel like if you go to Millersville and just do your homework you won’t realize your potential. The university presents so many opportunities outside of the classroom that not only prepared me for the real world but also set me apart from my colleagues. Instead of having virtually having the same resume, get the professional contacts you need to set you apart! At the time, I was one of four women in the music business technology program. I wanted to be well-rounded and prove myself in that field.

Why should students come to Millersville to study Music?
A variety of reasons. The Winter Center is the crown jewel of the Music department. I hope students know how lucky they are to have it. Most importantly, Millersville gives you so many opportunities beyond the classroom that will prepare you for your career.
